Colon Hydrotherapist

Arul first discovered colon hydrotherapy in 1995. And when she did, she immediately felt like it was the missing link to help her properly flush her system. She had tried many other methods of cleansing and flushing, but none had worked well for her.

Colon hydrotherapy was for her the answer she needed: it was gentle, painless and very effective. But, it wasn't until January of 2007 and in partnership with Alexander that Arul officially launched her dream business SanaVita.

Arul began her journey back to herself as a thirteen year old girl named Elizabeth in the suburbs of Long Island. While having lunch one afternoon with her friends, a day like any other, she was mid-burger when something stopped her from her next bite and a voice inside said: 'I cannot eat another bite of this, ever!' Without forethought, or a second thought, she gave up eating meat and began her life as a vegetarian.

This transformation inspired her to investigate further into the realm of nutrition and why certain foods not only nourished our bodies, but also our spirits. During a short visit to California, she realized that vegetarianism was much more widespread there and at age 18 moved to the West coast. It was there that she started a practice of spirituality embracing Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism. After doing Gongyo and chanting almost daily for 4 years, she moved back to New York City. Here she found that her dedication to this practice was wavering as her Friday night dance rituals at Twilo gained more momentum and her deep love for house music was born.

Shortly thereafter, the yoga movement began to really take flight in NYC and she started practicing. Now, instead of Buddhist prayers, she dedicated her self to a 6-day a week Asthanga yoga practice. Her teacher spoke of his most beloved teacher, Mata Amritanandamayi, otherwise known as 'Amma' or 'The Hugging Saint.' Arul went to meet Amma for a 2-week retreat at her ashram in San Ramon, California where she felt an immediate spark. On her second day in her presence, Amma called her over to offer her a name, a very special and rare occasion. Arul accepted her name, which means "grace," but still had more learning to do before she would be ready to embrace such a name.

Fast forward several years, and Arul was still getting out onto the dance floor and onto her yoga mat as much as possible, but she started to wear thin, realizing she needed a major shift in her life. Although she loved to go out and dance, it seemed the environment was too draining to her system and the consequences prohibited her from participating in other more wholesome qualities she held so dear.

It was time to clean out and do a cleanse, something she's looked toward to since she was nineteen, when she first started doing juice fasting. But she couldn't seem to get the momentum enough to do it alone. A friend of her's forwarded an email about a master cleanse fasting retreat. She signed up, and on the first night of the program, the teaching was to set a clear and precise intension for the fast: the sky was the limit, just be careful to be sure, because you would most likely get what you asked for. She asked for the strength to stop her destructive behavior, heal her heart and manifest her highest desires.

Why did you become a colon hydrotherapist?
i suffered from severe constipation. i was on a quest to heal myself. when i discovered colonics, it was like the heavens opened up and sang to me.  after a dedicated practice of weekly colonics with periodic cleansing and proper nutritional regime, finally i was able to go to the bathroom on a daily basis again. this practice took 3 years, but at the end of it i knew i wanted to be on the other end of the table, helping people to heal themselves through the work of colonics.

What’s your favorite thing about being a therapist?
connecting with each individual.  what a blessing to have such intimate and honest time with so many unique and interesting people, people whom i may never had the opportunity to cross paths with otherwise.

What’s your favorite food/meal?
kale cooked in coconut oil with garlic and tamari sauce on a cold day. or one of my famous smoothies on a hot one.

What’s your favorite recipe?
vegetable curry & kitchari. the kitchari is easy, the curry has a lot of chopping.

What’s your favorite quote?
long you'll live and high you'll fly, smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry. all you touch and all you see, is all your life will ever be.

What’s your favorite book?
i have 2 kids.  do they still write books?  anything on a new and interesting cleansing program!

What’s your favorite movie?
love, love, love, love, love.... i LOVE love stories! and a little drama... a bronx tale. that was a great movie...

Who has had the most influence on your life?
that's actually easy. naturale and seven of course! (those are my kids.)

What do you do when you’re not at SanaVita?
take care of naturale and seven.

Which supplements do you find indispensible in your own life?
probiotics. digestive enzymes.chlorophyll.

How do you like to cleanse when you’re cleansing?
i just love cleansing. i used to be dogmatic, totally hard core, only juice, master cleanse, no supplements. now that my life is more demanding and i don't have the luxury of getting massages, taking steams and doing yoga all day, i like to support myself with high quality supplements and nutrient rich powders during my cleanse.

How do you like to indulge, when you do?
icing. (who needs the cake when you've got icing?) and tasti d-lite with toppings.

If you had to give only one piece of health advice, what would it be?
give up the heavy starches, breads, pastas, pastries etc. exchange them for healthy oils and fats (coconut oil & avocado's being my 2 favs!) you'll be doing your intestines a BIG favor while dropping extra weight with ease.
